Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager (SSM) II, the Graphic Designer III will be responsible for the most complex duties related to conceptualizing, designing, and producing visual materials to convey the mission, goals, programs, and services of the California Earthquake Authority (CEA). This position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop creative designs for both print and digital platforms, ensuring all materials adhere to established design standards and proper use of CEA’s logo and brand identity.

The Graphic Designer III develops and maintains design templates for a variety of projects, including PowerPoint presentations, social media graphics, web-page imagery, and marketing campaign collateral. The incumbent works collaboratively across departments, incorporating feedback and critical review to deliver high-quality multimedia and graphic design solutions that support CEA’s outreach and communication objectives.

Working Conditions

The schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Incumbent will have to report to the office up to two days a week and may be more depending on business needs.

In accordance with Government Code 14200, telework may be available for this position for California residents based on the requirements of the position and may be discussed during the interview process. Hiring interviews may be available virtually, using teleconferencing or video conferencing options.

While working on site, the incumbent works in a professional office environment, in a climate-controlled cubicle which may fluctuate in temperature and is under artificial light. Incumbent will be required to use a computer, mouse, and video display terminal and will be required to sit for long periods of time at a computer screen. Employee must be able to focus for long periods of time, multi-task, adapt to changes in priorities and complete tasks or projects with short notice. Employees may be required to travel outside of their workstation to perform general tasks.

Special Requirements

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is REQUIRED and MUST be submitted with your application to be considered for this position.

The SOQ is a narrative discussion of how the candidate's education, training, experience, and skills qualify them for the position. The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate's ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ must be no more than two (2) pages in length, no less than 12-point font, organized, and numbered as reflected below. You must respond to all the following items, and please clearly indicate the title 'Statement of Qualifications' and your first and last name on the top of the SOQ.

1)  Describe your background and experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or other creative fields.
2)  Describe your experience creating visual communications that effectively convey complex or technical topics. In your response, include your creative process for transforming data, research, or technical information into visuals that are both clear and engaging.
3)  Describe your experience developing and implementing Creative Services. In your response, identify the types of media channels (e.g., digital, broadcast, print) you have managed and explain how you determine the appropriate mix of channels for a campaign.

Experience in printing, publishing, and graphic design

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe products

Knowledge and skill with visualizing data, using maps for communications purposes, developing compelling infographics, or data-driven informational tools

Strong spelling, grammar, writing skills, and the ability to pay close attention to detail and accuracy

Ability to proceed independently from general directions, work under tight deadlines, and prioritize assignments

Excellent collaboration, interpersonal, and customer service skills

Ability to work in a team environment and with various levels of staff

Experience gathering system and/or business requirements

Ability to present ideas and information effectively, both orally and in writing

Strong work ethic, initiative, and follow-through
